Solutions for a stylish and safe entrance

GDmatsEU offers a complete range of outdoor and indoor mats designed for professional and commercial use. Indoor cleaning mats are available in various colors, materials and multifunctional designs that suit any entrance. Together, they create a comprehensive entrance zone solution that ensures comfortable and safe entry into the building.

GDmatsEU professional entrance systems are designed to effectively remove dirt and moisture from footwear, prevent contaminants from penetrating the interior, keep entrance areas clean and presentable, while reducing the risk of slipping, tripping and falling on wet floors.

Up to 80% of indoor contamination enters buildings through pedestrian traffic. Using quality entrance mats ensures that most dirt and moisture is captured at entry. This extends the life of floor coverings, as the mats absorb a significant portion of initial wear.

Three-Zone Entrance Mat System

In addition to the aesthetic function at the building entrance, professional entrance mats fulfill three main tasks within the three-zone cleaning system:

Zone 1: Removal of Coarse Dirt

Over 20 days, 1000 people can bring up to 11 kilograms of dirt into a building. A properly designed entrance system can significantly reduce the amount of contaminants that would otherwise end up on interior carpets. Mats with brush surfaces are made from durable fibers that effectively scrape coarse dirt from shoe soles during passage and remove up to 40% of dirt before entering the building.

Zone 2: Shoe Cleaning and Floor Protection

The greatest threat to interior floors and carpets is dirt and dust. Dirt particles act like sandpaper, damaging the floor surface or carpet fibers when walked on. Within the first 2 meters of the entrance zone, 1500 people can remove up to 42% of contaminants. Quality entrance mats therefore significantly extend the life of floor coverings by absorbing initial wear and protecting the interior investment.

Zone 3: Shoe Drying and Safe Entry

Wet and slippery floors present an increased risk of injury. Absorbent mats in the third zone effectively dry shoes and reduce the risk of slipping or falling. Quality entrance mats can absorb up to 5 liters of water per m², keeping the entrance dry and safe.

Indoor Mats:

Public and commercial buildings with high traffic intensity can record up to 5000 passages daily. A quality entrance mat system therefore significantly contributes to improving indoor air quality, reducing dust levels, extending floor life and limiting cleaning and maintenance costs.

When designing and installing entrance systems, it is important to correctly determine the type, quality and size of the mat according to the space characteristics, traffic intensity and environmental conditions.

Functionality: The size, material and density of the mat affect its effectiveness – the more fibers and higher density, the better the capture of dirt and moisture. Polyamide and polypropylene fibers are strong, compression-resistant and maintain their shape even under high load. Polyamide excels in absorption properties and stain resistance.

Shoes should pass over the mat at least three times to achieve effective scraping, cleaning and drying. To capture 40% of dirt, approximately a 2-meter section of textile mat is needed, 4 meters captures about 65% and 6 meters up to 90% of contaminants. According to LEED standards, a minimum entrance system length of 3 meters is recommended.

Outdoor Mats:

Outdoor entrance mats represent the first line of defense against contaminants. According to ISSA tests, 1000 people can bring up to 9.6 kg of dirt over 20 days. During rainy or snowy weather, this amount increases up to twelvefold.

Functionality: Outdoor mats have an open, grid or tubular design that allows passage of water, snow and mud outside the walking surface. Raised protrusions ensure water drainage under the mat. Classic models like Oct-O-Mat™ or Rubber Brush™ are made from heavy rubber that keeps the mat stable. Modern designs like Oct-O-Flex™ have smaller drainage openings suitable for barrier-free entrances according to EU standards.

GDmatsEU rubber compounds are flexible, waterproof and weather-resistant. Extruded PVC is a durable yet flexible material resistant to UV radiation and oils. The main task of outdoor zone 1 is removal of coarse dirt, mud and contaminants – up to 40% of them before entering the interior. Outdoor mats are not absorbent, so they should be combined with an indoor system for perfect shoe cleaning and drying.

Installation and Customization:

Customization: Mats are supplied in rolls approximately 20 m long and can be made to measure including beveled edges or atypical shapes (circles, arcs, crescents). Accessories can also be supplied on request – joining tapes or edge strips.

Installation: Mats can be installed wall-to-wall or in recessed frames in entrance zones. The frame ensures level with the floor, stability and dirt capture between cleanings. For perfect placement, it is necessary to choose the appropriate mat thickness according to the recess depth. GDmatsEU offers frame fillings in various thicknesses and recommends using double-sided tapes or solvent-free adhesives.

Materials and Technologies

Polyamide (PA) – polymer with repeating amide bonds -CO-NH-, also known as nylon. Characterized by high durability and absorption properties.

Polypropylene (PP) – thermoplastic polymer used in textiles, for example in carpets or ropes. It is lightweight, durable and non-absorbent.

Decalon® – exclusive polypropylene fiber (2750 denier), provides high durability, effective moisture retention and lasting appearance.

Denier – unit of fiber thickness. In combination with surface weight and density, it determines mat performance and durability.

Rubber Materials

  • Natural Rubber (NR) – highly elastic material suitable for universal use, provides walking comfort.
  • SBR – styrene-butadiene rubber, synthetic rubber with excellent mechanical properties. Used as backing for heavy industrial mats.
  • NBR (Nitrile Rubber) – resistant to oils, heat and chemicals, suitable for environments with higher loads.

Thermoplastic Materials:

  • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) – recyclable material without toxic DOP and DMF components, suitable for mat backing layers.
  • Vinyl – flexible and durable plastic material ideal for carpet mats, especially at greater lengths.
  • DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate) – plasticizer that we do not use in our product mixtures to avoid health risks.

Surfaces of tufted mats can have loop or cut pile:

  • Loop Pile – creates a smooth, durable surface, ideal for high traffic areas where no tracks are left.
  • Multi-level Loop Pile – combines fibers of different heights to create textures and patterns.
  • Cut Pile – Velour – looks elegant and luxurious, suitable for representative spaces.
  • Cut Pile – Frisé – has deep texture and high durability.

Installation and Customization

Entrance mats can be installed wall-to-wall or in recessed frames. The frame ensures level transition with the floor, stability and dirt capture between maintenance.

Wet and slippery floors are a common safety risk. Mats with high absorption capacity (4–6 liters/m²) are ideal for spaces with intensive traffic. When designing the entrance, barrier-free access must be ensured – recessed frames and mats must be level with the floor according to requirements for wheelchair users.

Benefits of Entrance Mats

  • Reduction of Cleaning Costs: Up to 80% of dust and contaminants enter the interior from outside – a quality entrance system significantly prevents this. Regular use of entrance mats reduces the need for frequent cleaning and extends the life of floor coverings.
  • Safety and Comfort: Mats with anti-slip treatment reduce the risk of slipping at entry, especially during rainy or snowy weather. They also improve walking comfort.
  • Floor Protection: By capturing sand, water and small stones, they protect floors from scratching and wear.
  • Aesthetic Impression: A quality entrance mat looks presentable and keeps the entrance zone clean and tidy – the first impression that welcomes visitors, customers or employees.
  • Durability and Easy Maintenance: Modern materials such as needle-punched or rubber mats are wear-resistant and easily cleaned by vacuuming, rinsing or pressure washing.

A properly designed entrance mat system in three zones (exterior – transition – interior) represents a long-term investment in the cleanliness, safety and professional appearance of every building.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Permanently installed mats require regular maintenance and thorough cleaning to remove accumulated contaminants and prevent their further spread throughout the facility. The maintenance plan should include daily surface vacuuming, especially in areas with high traffic frequency, preventing dust accumulation and its pressing into mat fibers.

Weekly surface brushing helps loosen fibers and facilitates more thorough dirt removal during vacuuming. Monthly deep cleaning with the injection-extraction method effectively cleans fibers and removes residual contaminants.
